·  Can I be contacted when on a trip with you?
The answer to this question depends upon the character and the circumstances of the trip / expedition you are in. Usually, we give frequent reports either via HF-Radio Transceiver or a special Datatransfer method to our Base in Coyhaique and/or authorities - as requested during some activities. It is planned to make those frequent reports available on this website to your relatives and aquaintances, if you wish. For such an action we would like to ask you to advise us well ahead, so we can administrate necessary logins ahead of the trip.
Of course we will make everything possible that important messages from your relatives and friends reach you wherever you are out with us, and same is applied vice versa. Just make sure you give us enough information about your NOK and if then how to contact them.
In the near future, it will also be possible that you can use our Email over Radio functionality right from your expedition. This will have a small additional fee, which covers expenses and insurance of the communication systems.

·  How do you communicate in an emergency?
We try to take every possible precaution that such an event does not occur whilst you are with us. However, we have different ways to communicate to the outside world, whilst we are on tour:

All of our expeditions have to take Personal Locator Beacons with them. Those electronic devices transmit pulses and or information to a system of satellites out in space and will be received from any aircraft which flies in range. We count with  Satfind Plus 406's Beacon, which incorporates a GPS so Search and Rescue Forces can obtain fast and good coordinates from a party in distress. We also can use an LDT 126, which works on 121.5 MHz. Those PLB's however will only be used if the party or one of its integrants is in eminent danger for his /her life.
As a normal communication device we carry HF-Radios. We are permitted by the Chilean Telecommunications Authorities to use (and pay) our own frequencies for both voice and data comms. The radios and antennas are easy to handle and we will train you in doing so, because as it is with all things in life: it is always good to have a bit of redundancy.
On our kayaking expeditions in the fjords of the region we are advised to take a satellite phone and VHF Marine Band transceiver(s) with us. We will use an Iridium phone for that purpose, with extra battery backup and solar charger, since this will give us a more reliable service. As well, we carry flares and handfires with us, where tought necessary. Sometimes we have coverage from a normal mobile phone, this makes things easier.  Last but not least we will have a short instruction sheet with us, explaining all international and national forms and kinds of distress signals.

·  Can I use my mobile phone in Chile?
Yes, you can if you have got a TriBand mobile phone (we are using the frequency band of 1900 MHz in Chile for Mobile phone), and if your chip admits Roaming. Coverage is in bigger cities and settlements only, as for Region Aysén this would be Coyhaique, all the way to Balmaceda, Aisen, Ibañez, Chile Chico, Cochrane, but the net is growing. Another option is to bring your (unlocked) handphone and buy a chip here. Third option would be to buy a cheap phone here also (around 50 USD).

·  How is Internet connectivity in the Region?
Well, not as it should be. Even so one can find some sort of Internet connectivity almost in any village (libraries, cibrecafes, municipalidad), the connectivity is not even in Coyhaique real broadband. We do have GPRS service around Coyhaique also, but the bandwidth is worse than if I would use the odd 9600kb modem in special times of the day. Prizes however are moderate, you dont pay more than a couple of dimes for an hour of surfing the web. A hope at the bandwidth sky is a new project of the current government under Michelle Bachelet to push a glasfibre cable through which would connect the central part of the country with Coyhaique. This - if it happens - would be a real progress. Until then, one will pay too much money for too bad a bandwidth. If you can use the Internet whilst on travels with us will depend upon the itinerary, and upon the Mr Murphy.
