Exploring Lago O'Higgins with an Inflatable Avon Boat

2003 December to January - Chile

loh1 A self equipped and sponsored exploration trip around the Chilean shores of Lago O' Higgins/Chile.

The trip was split in two parts. First we went from Bahia bahamondez via Candelario Mansilla, Glacier O'Higgins Chico, Glacier O'Higgins Grande, El Manso, Santa Lucia, Pocas Pilchas all the way up to the outlflow of the lake. Passing all the shoreline on that side of the lake. We left the Avon 4,6m with 20hp Suzuki outboard and equipment close to the Salto of the Rio Pascua, which originates in the lake, and trekked in 3 days down to Lago Quetro, following the Rio Pascua.

On the second term of the trip, we went up and over the mountain range close to the Glaciar El Tigre, to reach boat and equipment again. We then moved back to Bahia Bahamondez via Once Hermanos. The overall trip by water was about 350km, by land maybe 50 km. Changing parties, december 2003 to january 2004. Re-discovery of an old road made by the trupps of Hans Steffen of the commision for limites and borderlines around 1900/1901.
