Volontariat für NGO Raleigh International im Temburong-Gebiet, Brunei 2000 September bis November - Negara Brunei Darussalam
 |
Terima kasih banyak-banyak!

EXPEDITION STAFF REPORT
Name:
Olaf Wündrich
Expedition: Expedition 00K Brunei
Position: Project Manager
________________________________________________________________
Olaf Wündrich was a voluntary member of staff with Raleigh
International in Brunei for three months from September to November
2000. Raleigh International is a charity which runs 10 week expeditions
overseas for young adults between the ages of 17 and 25. The volunteer
participants take part in adventure, community and environmental
projects and live and work together with other participants from
different countries and cultures. The focus of the experience is on the
personal development opportunities for the participants, whilst
undertaking meaningful project work. Each expedition is run by staff
who are themselves volunteers. They provide technical skills and people
management expertise which enable them to facilitate the volunteers'
learning and experience.
Olaf was the project manager responsible for one of the two adventure
projects. He had fulfilled the same role on an expedition in Chile at
the beginning of the year and it was very useful having someone of his
calibre and experience in charge of operating with novice groups in
such difficult mountainous jungle terrain.
The aim of the adventure projects is to take Venturers into a
challenging wilderness area with a minimum of equipment as an
opportunity for individuals to learn new skills and to experience a
sense of achievement. It is also a powerful group learning experience
as the group is only as strong as its collective ability to work
together. The plan for each phase was to do a week or more of jungle
trekking to the headwaters of the Temburong river from which point the
group canoed down river. The projects ran successfully and on the final
phase he led a group on a 17 day trek around the highest section of
border ridge taking in the highest 6,000 ft. summits along the way.
Olaf was totally reliable and dependable whilst operating in a remote
area far from immediate help or support. He has a strong set of
technical outdoor skills and was gifted at sharing his enthusiasm and
knowledge with each group of Venturers. He empowered individual
Venturers to lead the group and to act as trainers to pass skills on to
others. He has a clear and definite commitment to achieving the set
objectives and balances the capabilities of the least able individuals
against the majority of the group completing the route.
He was a very able and successful project manager, and I am very
grateful to him for his hard work, loyalty and support; and would
recommend him for staff positions on further Raleigh International
expeditions in the future.
