The Expedition was aimed for
Batu Lawi, a lone sandstone spire in the
Kelabit Highlands. During another expedition in 2000, Haji Ruslan and Olaf Wündrich spotted the prominent and huge pinnacle first time from the far away Temburong area. The whole Expedition took only two weeks from touch-down to lift-off in Brunei Darussalam. We are very happy to report that all seven members of the Expedition reached the summit of Batu Lawi, amongst them the first ascent by our two female climbers. This result was achieved because of the great jungle guiding and climbing abilities of Haji Ruslan and the overall comraderie and cooperation of all members of the Expedition.
We would like to thank the OBBD for the assisance and support they gave and as well our sponsor for part of the necessary transport, Mr. Ninan Chacko of NBT Brunei Darussalam, especially for the unforgettable evening in the Yacht club. We also would like to thank Mr Tom Hennessy for the sponsoring of two of his special hennessyhammocks, which proofed to be very valuable during the trip and far superior to the other hammock brands tested.
This was possibly the fifth ascent of Batu Lawi.
